GUIDE

Common e-commerce mistakes that weaken the sales journey

E-commerce problems rarely come from one bad button. Unclear offers, weak product information, difficult mobile use and missing measurement often work together.

Unclear audience and weak product explanation

Homepage, category and ad messages should align around the same customer problem.

Mobile and checkout friction

Responsive layout is not the same as mobile usability; filters, variants, cart and checkout need real-device tests.

Changing things without measurement

Without product-view, add-to-cart, checkout and purchase data, changes create more uncertainty.

Turn the audit into a prioritised conversion plan

Do not fix every e-commerce issue at the same time. Separate blockers from improvements. Payment failures, broken mobile navigation, missing delivery information, unavailable variants and incorrect tracking are blockers because they directly prevent a purchase or hide what is happening. Cosmetic changes and optional features should come later unless data shows that they address a major customer objection.

For each change, define the metric that should move and the segment that should be affected. A better filter may improve category-to-product progression, clearer delivery information may improve add-to-cart, and a shorter checkout may improve checkout-to-purchase. This makes the improvement programme measurable and prevents endless redesign without commercial evidence.
